Meet our Suncare Collection: introducing Blocked and Save Face
Let’s face it, sunscreen should be worn on a daily basis. It’s not just for those times that you go outside to bake in the sun on vacation. It’s especially important then, but also when you’re walking, hiking, farmers marketing, swimming, biking or even just having lunch outside or driving in your car.
The hardest part about this “needing to SPF'' situation is finding one that you actually like to use. Historically, sunscreens have been pore-clogging, full of harmful chemicals, leave a serious whitecast, or smell weird. Plus, the texture is too thick or goopy and leaves you feeling sticky. So despite the ever-important protection it provides, the application experience is a turn off.
But the tides have turned as we proudly debut a highly requested duo. We are excited to introduce you to our reef safe, mineral Suncare Collection, consisting of Blocked SPF 30 Body Sunscreen and Save Face SPF 30 Facial Sunscreen. Both deliver protection from UVA and UVB rays while providing added skin care benefits.
Enriched with essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidant–our broccoli-based sunscreen supports cellular renewal and prevents the damaging effects of the sun (exit sun spots and hyperpigmentation). Formulated with all skin types in mind, including the most sensitive and acne-prone, Blocked is naturally scented with coconut and orange, while Save Face is fragrance-free. Also, a mineral or physical sunscreen is inherently safer for sensitive skin as it sits atop the skin and blocks damaging rays from penetrating your skin barrier, as opposed to chemical sunscreens which penetrate the skin barrier and absorb the harmful rays. Finally, the lightweight texture blends into your skin without a noticeable whitecast or greasy feeling.
Our sunscreen checks all the boxes—smells good, feels good, looks good, and IS good (for you and the planet). Now let’s dive deeper.
The protection factor
You can choose between mineral, chemical, or hybrid filters. Staying true to Miami Beach Bum values, we formulated a sunscreen with mineral (zinc-oxide) protection.
Mineral sunscreens have been determined to be safer for the environment by the National Ocean Service. Chemical sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene that are harmful to marine life and coral reefs. The chemicals can be released into the water when you swim or even public waterways when you rinse off in the shower. For these reasons, the National Ocean Service recommends only using mineral sunscreen when you plan to swim in the ocean. Hawaii has even gone as far as banning the sale and distribution of all chemical sunscreens in an effort to protect the environment. Both Blocked and Save Face are compliant with Hawaii Reef-Safe standards.
The second element of the protection factor is the SPF (sun protection factor) level. We chose to go with SPF 30. Many people don’t really know what that number means, so we thought we’d briefly explain it.
When testing and regulating sunscreen, that number refers to how much longer it would take for the sun’s radiation to turn skin red with the sunscreen on—versus the time it would take to redden if you weren’t wearing any at all. So, our sunscreen would keep skin from getting red 30 times longer than it would without sunscreen. Our products have been tested and approved for meeting SPF 30 standards by the FDA.
With this combination of 100% zinc-oxide mineral SPF 30 sunscreen, you are protecting the things that matter most—yourself and our planet.
What’s inside
At Miami Beach Bum we are all about restoring the health of our skin’s ecosystem. So of course our suncare collection had to pack more benefits than just protection from sun damage.
The three ingredients in Blocked and Save Face: Algae, Aloe and Broccoli. Our hero ingredient broccoli, is packed with fatty acids, zinc, vitamin A + C, lutein and antioxidants like sulforaphane. Making it a hero ingredient for hydration, cellular turnover, preventing hyperpigmentation and promoting a healthy complexion. Aloe prevents and repairs sun damage while restoring skin barrier function for long-lasting, skin-plumping hydration. Then there’s brown algae— the MVP skin booster. It works by replenishing essential vitamins and boosting collagen production to improve skin elasticity. Other antioxidant-rich botanicals like green tea and calendula protect against free radical damage caused by environmental stressors (like UVA/UVB rays) and reduce signs of hyperpigmentation and rough texture.
Fragrance-free, Save Face features squalane and jojoba oil for additional skincare benefits. Derived from sugarcane, squalane is high in fatty acids and has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that work to restore skin barrier function and reduce irritation while adding extra long-lasting hydration. While jojoba oil balances sebum production and prevents any sunscreen-related breakouts. Tested on sensitive skin, results showed that the collection is non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and acnegenic (won’t cause acne breakouts).
Now that's what we call SPF + next level skincare benefits.
